Asia Morning Briefing: How Will Coinbase Rebrand Its Wallet?

Good Morning, Asia. Here’s what’s making news in the markets:
Welcome to Asia Morning Briefing, a daily summary of top stories during U.S. hours and an overview of market moves and analysis. For a detailed overview of U.S. markets, see CoinDesk’s Crypto Daybook Americas.
Rest in Peace, Coinbase Wallet.
No, the app itself isn’t going away, but it is getting a new name.
On its X profile, its name is crossed out and replaced with a ‘TBA’ and a few question marks.
«There’s plenty of speculation about what it means, but I’m leaning toward ‘The Base App.’ That would fit the idea of Base unveiling a range of in-app experiences directly inside its wallet,» Bradley Park, a Seoul-based analyst with DNTV Research, told CoinDesk in an interview.
Base Creator Jesse Pollak was tapped to lead Coinbase’s Wallet team last October, which lends credence to Park’s theory.
In an interview on the sidelines of Devcon in Bangkok last year, Pollak played up the decentralization of Base. It could be that the wallet is due for a rebrand to highlight its decentralized nature and distance from Coinbase itself.
It’s not the first time Coinbase has re-branded its wallet. Originally it was launched as ‘Toshi’, and in 2018 that name was dropped in favor of Coinbase Wallet.
Ethereum’s ZK Upgrade Earns Institutional Praise from Cathie Wood
ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood says Ethereum is “proposing the right moves for scalability and privacy to maintain its lead in the institutional world,” as the Ethereum Foundation unveils a roadmap to bring zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) directly to its base layer.
While Wood acknowledged she does not grasp all the technical details, her endorsement highlights growing institutional confidence in Ethereum’s long-term vision.
The proposed upgrade would let validators verify cryptographic proofs of block validity rather than re-executing each transaction, dramatically reducing computational overhead. These proofs would be generated by block builders or third-party zk-prover networks and verified in under 10 seconds, using hardware that costs less than $100,000 and consumes no more than 10 kilowatts of power.
The plan would boost network throughput and decentralization, but comes with tradeoffs. Shifting the burden of computation from validators to provers could introduce liveness risks if those provers go offline or collude. The Ethereum Foundation aims to mitigate these risks through prover diversity, protocol hardening, and eventually enabling at-home participants to contribute to proving.
If successful, this would make Ethereum the first major blockchain to integrate ZKPs at the protocol layer, reinforcing its position as the dominant infrastructure for both decentralized applications and institutional adoption. Combined with cheaper data availability via blobs and advances in zk-rollups, Ethereum is positioning itself as the chain most ready for scale.
Market Movements:
BTC: Bitcoin rallied 1% to nearly $119K over the weekend amid triple-normal trading volumes, while BlackRock’s IBIT crossed $80 billion in crypto assets under management, signaling strong institutional demand despite a late-session profit-taking reversal.
ETH: Ethereum surged past $3,000 for the first time since February, rising 3% amid record institutional inflows and heightened trading volumes that signaled strong bullish momentum.
Gold: Gold climbed to $3,371 as central banks continue their historic accumulation spree, over 1,000 tonnes annually since 2022, fueling a bullish breakout above key technical levels and setting sights on $3,578 and beyond.
Nikkei 225: Asia-Pacific markets opened lower Monday as investors reacted to President Trump’s surprise weekend announcement of 30% tariffs on the EU and Mexico starting August 1, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 falling 0.33%.

Digital Asset Fund Flows Hit $3.7B Last Week, 2nd-Highest on Record: CoinShares

Digital asset funds saw $3.7 billion of inflows last week, the second-largest figure on record, according to data tracked by crypto asset manager CoinShares.
The flows are surpassed only by those in the week ended Dec. 6 last year, when they topped $4 billion, the Jersey-based company said in its weekly roundup on Monday.
The 13th consecutive week of gains by crypto investment products took total asset under management (AUM) past $200 billion for the first time, reaching $211 billion.
U.S.-listed products dominated the inflows with nearly $3.74 billion registered, while products in Germany and Sweden saw outflows of $85.7 million and $15.7 million respectively.
Bitcoin products accounted for $2.7 billion of the inflows taking the total AUM to $179.5 billion, which is equal to 54% of the AUM held in gold exchange-traded products (ETPs), CoinShares said.
The week ended July 11 saw a kickstart to the crypto bull market, with bitcoin gaining nearly 10% to clock an all-time high of around $118,000. This has continued into the current week, with BTC climbing as high as $122,873.45, according to CoinDesk data.

Bitcoin Bears Urge Caution as BTC Price Tops $122K: Crypto Daybook Americas

By Omkar Godbole (All times ET unless indicated otherwise)
The crypto market is a sea of green with top coins extending near-vertical rallies that began over two weeks ago. Bitcoin (BTC) climbed above $122,000 for the first time on record, outpacing gold to become the best-performing asset in 2025.
The rally has the crypto community identifying bitcoin price targets ranging from $140,000 to $200,000. Some observers, however, cautioned against getting carried away by the bull momentum.
«While some analysts project $130-140K targets, history teaches us that parabolic moves often invite sharp corrections,» said Marcin Kazmierczak, a co-founder of blockchain oracle Redstone. «The industry’s maturation is real, institutional infrastructure, regulatory clarity, and use cases are all advancing. Yet this very maturation demands we approach these milestones with professional discipline rather than euphoria.»
Kazmierczak noted that while the technical breakout is undeniable, the market hasn’t seen a correction in over 47 days. «More than $276m in leveraged positions were liquidated in the last 24 hours alone, reminding us that volatility remains bitcoin’s constant companion,» he added.
More caution shows in options market activity on Deribit, which suggests traders are in no rush to take bullish speculative bets. One-month risk reversals, measuring the pricing differential between bullish calls and bearish puts, are flat even as the spot price trades at record highs.
«By contrast, September and December risk reversals continue to show a firm bid for calls, which could indicate a preference to hedge against short-term volatility while maintaining a longer-term bullish outlook,» Singapore-based QCP Capital said in a market update.
Looking ahead, Congress’ so-called Crypto Week could see lawmakers discuss the CLARITY Act, the GENUIS Act and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance Act. Clarity on the regulatory front could bode well for top tokens, stablecoins and, especially, tokenization. As Kazmierczak said in his analysis, the real opportunity lies not in speculative trading, but in building the infrastructure for programmable money and asset tokenization.
Tuesday’s U.S. inflation data is likely to show a renewed uptick in inflation in June. According to analysts, it may not matter much to crypto, which is being driven higher by factors other than Fed rate-cut odds. Nevertheless, potential dollar strength on the back of inflation data could affect the crypto market. Stay alert!

- Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) jumped 31% over the weekend after Justin Sun tweeted a cartoon penguin in TRON gear.
- That single post, followed by Pudgy’s official “Everyone will Huddle” reply, triggered a wave of retail speculation and memetic energy across Solana markets.
- PENGU now trades at $0.0301 — up nearly 99% in the past 7 days — with daily volume topping $2.1 billion, making it one of the week’s best-performing assets.
- Pudgy Penguin NFTs surged to 14 ETH on Magic Eden, a 23.5% gain in 24 hours, indicating crossover attention from collectors.
- On-chain analyst Ali Metinex sees strong fundamentals, calling PENGU “one of the few meme coins with actual staying power,» and projects a move toward $0.060 by August.
- A spot ETF proposal filed by asset manager Canary Capital added fuel to the fire. If approved, it would give institutional investors direct exposure to PENGU.
- The ETF filing comes as market structure around memecoins matures, and as Pudgy’s user base crosses 430,000 across social platforms.
- PENGU’s rise has outpaced broader Solana memecoins this cycle, helped by strong branding, social virality and catalysts like Sun’s backing and ETF speculation.
- Despite the euphoria, traders are watching for a retrace. Overbought indicators and weekend volume spikes often precede short-term corrections in meme assets.
Derivatives Positioning
- The cumulative open interest in USDT and dollar-denominated BTC perpetuals on offshore exchanges has risen to 268K, the highest since May. Still, the tally remains locked in the nearly two-year-long range of 200K BTC to 255K BTC. A break out here could mean influx of new money chasing upside.
- Ether open interest remains elevated near record highs, tallying over 5.3 million ETH.
- BTC, ETH funding rates finally topped 10%, catching up with altcoins to suggest growing bias for bullish plays.
- Block trades via OTC network Paradigm featured calendar spreads and a bull put spread. ETH flows included bull call spreads and a long call financed by selling puts.

Bhutan Quietly Sells $59M in Bitcoin as BTC Hits $123K, Still Holds Over $1.4B in Reserves

Bhutan is cashing in on crypto, again.
The tiny Himalayan nation accelerated sales from its crypto treasury and offloaded over 512.84 bitcoin (BTC), worth $59.47 million, in the past four days, according to blockchain tracking platform Lookonchain, as BTC soared to over $123,000.
Bhutan still holds 11,411 BTC even after this round of selling, a stack currently valued at over $1.4 billion, per Lookonchain.
Unlike Germany — which sold nearly 50,000 BTC it had earlier seized into a rising market last year — Bhutan’s BTC holdings come from its state-backed mining activities and officials tend to sell holdings whenever prices rally.
Much of this strategy is executed via Druk Holding & Investments (DHI), the nation’s sovereign wealth fund, which began mining Bitcoin by utilizing the country’s abundant hydropower.
As such, the government has committed to clean mining practices and is developing crypto-forward infrastructure projects like Gelephu Mindfulness City in partnership with firms like Bitdeer.
